Support for Cuban Embargo Continues

ALEXANDRIA, VA  A Fabrizio, McLaughlin & Associates national telephone survey of 1200 American adults finds widespread support for the Bush administrations position of continuing the Cuban embargo until the Castro regime honors human rights, releases political prisoners and holds free and fair elections.

When given background on the Cuban embargo and the Bush administrations position on it, 56% supported the embargo, 27% said the embargo should be lifted regardless of the Castro regimes behavior.

"Once again, this shows the difficulty the anti-embargo forces have in convincing Americans that the embargo should be lifted," said Robert Moran, Vice President at Fabrizio, McLaughlin & Associates.

Seventy seven percent (77%) of Republicans, 52% of independents and 45% of Democrats supported the administrations position on the embargo.

"Strong support for the embargo among Republicans assures that it will continue until the Cuban regime changes or Democrats control the executive and legislative branches in Washington," said Robert Moran, Vice President at Fabrizio, McLaughlin & Associates.

"In the end, the onus is on those who would lift the embargo to explain to the American public why an America devoted to the war on terror should freely trade with a dictator who according to Agence France Presse, declared at the University of Tehran only five months before the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon that Iran and Cuba, in cooperation with each other, can bring America to its knees, said Robert Moran, Vice President at Fabrizio, McLaughlin & Associates.
